The Most Popular TV Show in Each State
A good TV show has the ability to totally captivate its audience with good writing, a stellar cast, and a catchy soundtrack. There are undoubtedly a lot of great shows out there right now that have all of those things and more, making it difficult to pick just one favorite, but using data from IMDB and Google Trends, we identified the most popular TV show in each state in the last year. Keep reading to see what the most-watched TV show in YOUR state is! Can you guess what the most-watched TV show in the entire country is? (We’ll give you a hint: It’s not The Office.)
Alabama
In Alabama, The Vampire Diaries reigns supreme when it comes to the most popular TV show. If you haven’t seen it, the show is about a teenage girl named Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev) who falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan (played by Paul Wesley). But to make matters even more complicated, a love triangle develops when Stefan’s older brother Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder) tries to bring back a past love who happens to look exactly like Elena.
Alaska
When it comes to TV shows, Alaskans prefer WandaVision. The show was made for Disney+ and is based on the Marvel characters Wanda Maximoff and Vision. Wanda (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (played by Paul Bettany) live in a variety of sitcoms that were popular in each decade from the 1950s through the 2010s. In a nutshell (and without giving away too much information because the show’s premise is rather complex!), Vision dies in Infinity War (2018) but comes back seemingly alive in the show. We’ll leave you with that much.
Arizona
Residents of the Grand Canyon State are partial to The Boys. The show stars an ensemble cast and is based on the DC comic book of the same name. The premise involves a group of vigilante superheroes known as the “Seven” as they fight other superheroes who abuse their powers. The series was renewed for a third season in July of 2020 and is scheduled for release in June 2022. The show has been so successful that two spin-off series have been created, one of which aired in March 2022.
Arkansas
Arkansans love Supernatural as their go-to TV show, and luckily for them, the show has no shortage of material. The first season aired all the way back in 2005 and the show concluded in November 2020, making for more than 300 episodes. The story follows two brothers, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, as they hunt supernatural beings while traveling across the United States in their 1967 Chevy Impala. Many of these supernatural beings are based on American folklore.
California
It’s probably not at all surprising to see that Friends made this list, is it? The ‘90s sitcom is one of the most popular TV shows of all time, and apparently Californians very much concur! It lasted for 10 seasons between 1994 and 2004, receiving numerous Primetime Emmy award nominations. In case you haven’t seen it, the story revolves around six friends who all live in Manhattan and frequently convene at a café aptly called Central Perk.
Colorado
People of the Centennial State love Stranger Things, and we really don’t blame them for that because it's certainly a great show. In case you haven’t seen it, the story is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s where a young boy named Will Byers goes missing. All the while bizarre supernatural happenings begin to occur around the town, including the emergence of a mysterious young girl with psychokinetic powers named Eleven.
Connecticut
13 Reasons Why is the show that people in Connecticut prefer watching above all else. The show revolves around the aftermath of a high school student named Hannah Baker (played by Katherine Langford) taking her own life. Before her death, Hannah leaves behind a box full of cassette tapes that give details of the reasons she chose to end her life, as well as the people she believes are to blame. The show is based on the book of the same name, written by Jay Asher.
Delaware
In Delaware, the preferred TV show is The Umbrella Academy starring Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, and more. The show is based off of a superhero comic book series created by Gerard Way (the lead singer of My Chemical Romance), and centers around a family of adopted siblings who all come together to solve the mystery of their father’s death and combat the impending threat of an apocalypse. The story was originally intended to be a movie but that idea was scrapped in 2015 in favor of a TV series.
Florida
When Floridians need something to watch, they tend to opt for Suits, a show starring Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle, and more. The story is set at a New York City law firm and focuses on Mike Ross (played by Patrick J. Adams), a man with a photographic memory who talks his way into getting a job as an associate at the firm, despite never having gone to law school. Ross ends up working for successful closer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), and together they win lawsuits and close cases, all while hiding Ross’s secret.
Georgia
Residents of the Peach State turn on Luke Cage when they need something to watch. The show is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and centers around the character of the same name, also known as Power Man, a former convict with superhuman strength who fights corruption and crime. Mike Colter stars as Luke Cage. The cast includes Mahershala Ali, Theo Rossi, and Rosario Dawson and the show features numerous musical guests as well as a '90s hip-hop score created by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
Hawaii
Hawaiians love Cobra Kai above all other shows. The show is meant as a sequel to the original Karate Kid films of the ‘80s, with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively. The show has been met with widespread critical acclaim, with the third season being nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. As of August 2021, the series has been renewed for a fifth season.
Idaho
Like California, the state of Idaho has Friends as its most popular TV show. The show reached the number one spot in its eighth season in final television season ratings, but was within the top 10 during all 10 seasons. On May 6, 2004, 52.5 million Americans tuned in to watch the season finale, making it the fifth most-watched season finale in the history of television, as well as the number one most-watched TV episode of the 2000s.
Illinois
Like Connecticut, Illinoisans like 13 Reasons Why best out of any other TV show. You may be surprised to learn that the concept actually started out as a film adaptation of the book of the same name. Development of the film (which was to star Selena Gomez as Hannah Baker) began in 2011 but was eventually scrapped in favor of a TV series. The show first aired in October 2015, and wrapped up with a fourth season in June 2020.
Indiana
Hoosiers are big fans of the show The Defenders, which is yet another storyline based on the Marvel comics. The show centers around the characters Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist who all make up a superhero team called The Defenders. Although critics mostly left positive reviews for this Marvel crossover, they were disappointed with the overall story, the show's pacing, and the use of The Hand as villains. Accordingly, it became the least-viewed Marvel series after its release.
Iowa
The Big Bang Theory reigns supreme in Iowa. We’re willing to bet that most of you have already seen it before, but in case not, the show is about five characters in Pasadena, California, most of whom are scientists and moderately socially awkward. The cast includes Kaley Cuoco, Jim Parsons, and Johnny Galecki. Initially the show didn’t receive very favorable reviews, but critics were won over by the second and third seasons, and it was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series every year between 2011 through 2014.
Kansas
When Kansans are bored and just need something to watch, they put on Modern Family, which follows the lives of three different diverse families in the Los Angeles suburbs through a mockumentary lens. The show ran for 11 seasons from September 23, 2009 through April 8, 2020 and was critically acclaimed from the get-go, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in each of its first five years. Critics’ reviews became more mixed as time went on, but the show’s fan base has remained loyal.
Kentucky
Ironically, the top TV show in Kentucky is about Chicago, and the top TV show in Illinois is not about Chicago. Go figure. Chicago Fire is the first installment of the Chicago franchise, about various public services in (you guessed it) the city of Chicago. In particular, Chicago Fire follows those employed at the Chicago Fire Department. The series premiered in 2012 and released its tenth season in September 2021. As of February 2020, an eleventh season is scheduled to be released.
Louisiana
Residents of the Bayou State are apparently into the horror genre, with American Horror Story being their favorite TV show. Each season revolves around paranormal happenings (some of which are inspired by true stories) and is a self-contained miniseries with a completely different cast and settings. Although some individual seasons have had mixed reviews, the show as a whole has largely been well-received, particularly individual actors’ performances, since it first aired in December of 2011.
Maine
Mainers are partial to The Queen’s Gambit, a streaming miniseries that’s based on a 1983 novel of the same name, written by Walter Tevis. The story follows Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), a fictional chess prodigy struggling with substance abuse. The show was released on Netflix in October 2020 and after four weeks became Netflix’s most-watched scripted miniseries. Taylor-Joy’s performance has been widely praised, as well as the accurate depiction of chess by the chess community.
Maryland
Like their Georgian counterparts, Maryland residents are also partial toward the show Luke Cage. The first season was released on Netflix on September 30, 2016, followed by the second season on June 22, 2018. Although the first two seasons received positive reviews and accolades (including a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award), unfortunately creative differences during production of the third season led to Netflix canceling the show in October 2018. All of the existing episodes are now available on Disney+.
Massachusetts
Residents of the Baked Bean State turn on The Handmaid’s Tale when they need something to watch. The story, which is based on the book of the same name and written in 1985 by Margaret Atwood, centers around a dystopian reality after a Second American Civil War occurs, leading to a misogynistic totalitarian society that enslaves women who are of childbearing age. Luckily for fans of the show, a fifth season is in the works as of April 2022, as well as a sequel series that will be based on another of Atwood's novels, entitled The Testaments.
Michigan
Michiganders are partial to Orange is the New Black, a comedy-drama based on the memoir of the same name written by Piper Kerman. Kerman wrote about her experiences doing 15 months at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison, for money-laundering activities. Ultimately she only ended up serving 13 months and has spoken widely about her experiences in prison since, which is what led to the development of the show. Kerman now works for non-profit organizations as a communication strategist.
Minnesota
In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Fargo reigns superior as far as TV shows go. The series was created by Noah Hawley, although the concept is based on and takes place in the same universe as the 1996 movie of the same name, written and directed by the Coen Brothers. The show utilizes an anthology format wherein each season is set in a different location with a different cast, as well as each being heavily inspired by a different Coen Brothers film.
Mississippi
People in the Magnolia State enjoy watching Grey’s Anatomy on average above all other TV shows. The show, which first aired in 2005, is about the lives of medical staff in Seattle during their residencies as they grow into experienced doctors, all while juggling their personal lives with their demanding work schedules. The title is a nod to the anatomy textbook entitled Gray's Anatomy, which was written by Henry Gray and published in 1858. As of January 2022, the show was renewed for a nineteenth season.
Missouri
Residents of the Show-Me State would probably love to show you their favorite TV series: Ozark. The show stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as Marty and Wendy Byrde, a married couple who move their family to the Lake of the Ozarks for money laundering purposes. The show has been widely well-received, especially for its writing and performances from the lead actors. Part I of the fourth and final season was released on January 21, 2022 and part II is scheduled to be released on April 29, 2022.
Montana
Apparently Montanans love what’s close to home, as their favorite TV show is Yellowstone. The series stars the likes of Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley, and Kelly Reilly, and centers around the conflicts that arise on the shared borders of a cattle ranch, land developers, and a Native American reservation. As of February 2022, the show was renewed for a fifth season, which will be divided into two installments of seven episodes each. (Oh, and the national park is pretty nice too!)
Nebraska
Along with their Colorado comrades, people in the Antelope State love to watch Stranger Things. The show has been around since July 2016 and immediately became a hit with people all over the country. Since then three seasons have been released, with a two-part fourth season set to air in May and July 2022, respectively. A fifth and final (much to our dismay) season was confirmed in February 2022. For now, we wait for it with bated breath!
Nevada
In Nevada, people are most likely to put on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina when they need some entertainment. The show is based on the classic Archie Comics series, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. However, unlike the classic sitcom from the late ‘90s with Melissa Joan Hart, this iteration is significantly darker, so only watch if you’re in the mood for some horror! Unfortunately the show was canceled in July 2020 after two seasons in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New Hampshire
In the Granite State, Breaking Bad is the go-to TV show for many folks. The story centers around Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston), a dejected and underpaid high school chemistry teacher who must figure out a way to secure his family’s finances after he learns of his stage-three cancer diagnosis. He consequently partners with one of his former students (played by Aaron Paul) to produce and distribute illicit substances in order to obtain enough money.
New Jersey
It should really come as no surprise that New Jerseyans’ favorite TV program is The Sopranos. The show, which is set in New Jersey, is about an Italian-American mobster named Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini) as he tries to balance his family life with being the leader of a crime ring - much of which is discussed during his therapy sessions. More than a decade after its completion, The Sopranos is widely considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time.
New Mexico
Better Call Saul is the show of choice for New Mexicans, which is fitting considering it was set and filmed in Albuquerque. The show is a spin-off prequel to Breaking Bad and centers around the character Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) and his shift from dedicated lawyer and former con artist into a defense attorney named Saul Goodman. Another central character is retired police officer Mike Ehrmantraut (played by Jonathan Banks), who becomes affiliated with the Juarez cartel. The sixth and final season is set to air on April 18, 2022.
New York
How I Met Your Mother is the preferred TV show in the Empire State. Set in Manhattan, the show centers around Ted Mosby (played by Josh Radnor) and his group of friends with Ted narrating the story of how he met his future kids’ mother from events that occurred between 2005 and 2013. HIMYM generally received critical acclaim throughout its run and developed somewhat of a cult following (although most fans will be the first to tell you that the series finale was terrible).
North Carolina
It seems that North Carolinians love Grey’s Anatomy just as much as Mississippians do! The show revolves around the life of Dr. Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo), who begins as an intern and works her way up to being the chief of general surgery. Other cast members include Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, and Patrick Dempsey. As of April 2022, Grey’s Anatomy is on its nineteenth season, making it the longest-running scripted primetime show currently on ABC.
North Dakota
Unfortunately the favorite TV show in North Dakota isn’t Fargo as would seem fitting, but Shameless isn’t such a bad pick either. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, Shameless is based on the British series of the same name about a dysfunctional father and his six children who learn to take care of themselves. The show’s producers wanted to distinguish it from other shows about working-class Americans. Accordingly, the show’s creator Paul Abbott stated, “It’s not My Name is Earl or Roseanne. It’s got a much graver level of poverty attached to it. It’s not blue collar; it’s no collar.”
Ohio
If, by this point, you guessed that Friends is the most-watched TV show in the United States right now, you’d be correct! For the Friends fanatics who longed for more content, the Friends: The Reunion special aired on May 27, 2021. Fans got to watch 104 minutes of the original cast revisiting some of the show’s famous sets, including the Central Perk coffee shop, the water fountain, and some of the characters’ apartments. The special also included celebrity guests and reenactments of past episodes.
Oklahoma
Orange is the New Black is the favorite TV show of people in Oklahoma. As of 2016, it is the longest-running and most-watched original series on Netflix and was highly critically acclaimed throughout its entire run, winning various awards including three Emmy Awards for the first season alone. It is also the first series to win Emmy nominations in both the comedy and drama categories, because a rule change in 2015 forced the show to switch from the comedy to the drama category.
Oregon
Oregonians are partial toward the show Disenchantment, an animated adult fantasy show created by Matt Groening (of The Simpsons). The story is about a dysfunctional princess named Bean, her elf companion named Elfo, and her personal demon named Luci. The first ten episodes of season one were released in August 2018, and the second ten were released in September 2019. Netflix renewed the show for another season, the first part being released in January 2021 while the second part was released in February 2022.
Pennsylvania
Residents of Pennsylvania love the show Mindhunter, which is about the founding of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in the late 1970s and the beginning of the concept of criminal profiling. The show, which stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, was first released on Netflix in October 2017, with a second season being released in August 2019. Unfortunately a third season isn’t on the horizon at the moment, as one of the producers has expressed interest in pursuing other projects instead.
Rhode Island
Residents of the tiny state of Rhode Island prefer to watch Peaky Blinders, a British crime drama series starring Cillian Murphy, Tommy Shelby, and Helen McRory. Set in Birmingham, England, the story is centered around the antics of the Peaky Blinders crime ring in the aftermath of World War I. It’s based on a true story of the gang of the same name that operated in the city of Birmingham between the 1890s and the 1910s.
South Carolina
Like Arkansas, people in the Palmetto State love the show Supernatural. Given how popular the show is today, it might surprise you to learn that it took series creator Eric Kripke several years to successfully pitch the show. Once it was finally approved by The WB, the pilot episode was viewed by more than 5 million people and the first four episodes’ ratings were high, prompting the network to pick up the show for a full season. Interestingly, Kripke only intended for it to have three seasons; clearly that didn’t go as planned.
South Dakota
Residents of the Mount Rushmore State are big fans of the show NCIS, which revolves around a fictional team of special agents who are part of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. NCIS is a spinoff of the show JAG, a legal drama that initially aired in 1995. NCIS first aired in 2003 and on Mar 31, 2022 it was renewed for a twentieth season. Over the years it’s inspired several spinoff shows, including NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, and NCIS: Hawaii.
Tennessee
In Tennessee, House of Cards is the favorite TV show on average. The show is an adaptation of the 1990 BBC series of the same name, which is based off of a 1989 book (also of the same name) written by Michael Dobbs. The story focuses on Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey), a politician from South Carolina’s 5th congressional district, who is passed over for appointment as Secretary of State so he and his wife Claire (played by Robin Wright) instigate a malicious plan to obtain power. Although the show received favorable ratings from when it first aired in 2013, Netflix ultimately terminated its relationship with Spacey due to inappropriate behavior and the show ended after the sixth season in 2018 without his involvement.
Texas
Jane the Virgin is the favorite show of people in Texas, which is perhaps fitting seeing as the Lone Star State is part of the Bible Belt and the show is about a devout Catholic woman. The show centers around Jane (played by Gina Rodriguez), a celibate woman who winds up pregnant due to an accidental artificial insemination at her doctor’s office. The show received favorable reviews, especially for the exceptional writing and for Rodriguez’s performance.
Utah
Are you surprised to see that The Office wasn’t more prevalent on this list? We certainly are too. Nevertheless, residents of the Mormon State still love tuning in to see bumbling idiot Michael Scott’s antics at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, and we don’t blame them for that. The show is based off of the BBC series of the same name, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The American version lasted from 2005 through 2013, but it’s probably safe to say that most fans felt that was far too short of a run.
Vermont
The Crown is the perfect show for anyone who’s obsessed with the British monarchy and its history. Do Vermonters take interest in that subject? We have no idea, but they do love the series nonetheless. The first two seasons star Claire Foy as a young Queen Elizabeth, Matt Smith as Prince Phillip and Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret. In seasons 3 and 4, Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, and Helena Bonham Carter take over those respective roles. The fifth and sixth seasons, which are set to be released in November 2022, will cover Queen Elizabeth’s reign into the 21st century.
Virginia
Folks who live in the Old Dominion State are partial toward Daredevil, which you may recall from earlier, is a character in The Defenders. Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox, is a masked vigilante who fights crime by night and is a blind lawyer by day by the name of Matt Murdock. There are three seasons of the show, all of which received positive reviews and award nominations. However, Netflix canceled Daredevil in November 2018. All episodes are now available on Disney+.
Washington
Washingtonians enjoy Altered Carbon, a cyberpunk series based off of a 2002 book of the same name written by Richard K. Morgan. The story involves a former-soldier-turned-investigator named Takeshi Kovacs who is released from prison to solve a murder. The story takes place in a universe where consciousness can be transferred to different bodies. Unfortunately fans of the show who crave new material are out of luck, as the series was canceled in February 2020 after just two seasons.
West Virginia
Virgin River is what people in West Virginia are most likely to turn on when they need some entertainment. The show is a romantic drama based on the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr about a woman named Melinda “Mel” Monroe who moves to a small town in Northern California called Virgin River in order to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner. The first season aired in December 2019, and as of September 2021, it was renewed for a fourth and fifth season.
Wisconsin
Wisconsinites like Making a Murderer, which is fitting because it takes place in the Badger State itself. The show is about a man named Steven Avery who was wrongfully convicted of attempting to murder Penny Beerntsen in 1985, for which he spent 18 years in prison from 1985 through 2003. In 2007 Avery was convicted of yet another murder, this time a woman named Teresa Halbach. It’s well worth a watch for any fans of true crime!
Wyoming
Last but not least is Wyoming, where people prefer to watch Lost in Space. The show is a 2018 reboot of the classic 1965 show of the same name inspired by a novel written in 1812 called The Swiss Family Robinson. The show is about a family of space colonists whose ship goes off course. The series was released in April 2018, with a second season released in December 2019 and a third and final season being released in December 2021.
